In case you missed it; BROWNS WIN…AGAIN…YIPPEE..

Browns vs. Jaguars

Browns vs. Jaguars

This was the 2nd to last play which ALMOST made me have to get ER Help! Jaguar QB threw a touchdown pass to Jones who bobbled the ball about 4 times before a Browns player knocked him down. That would have tied or won the game. Phew..

Browns vs. Jaguars

Next up: Baltimore Ravens. BOOOO! RAVENS! BOOO!! GO CLEVELAND

I went for a very late morning run with my old friend, Tracy. Chapman, that is. As we turned a corner near Emory University, she reminded me:

“don’t be tempted by the shiny apple, don’t you eat of a bitter fruit, hunger only for a taste of justice, hunger only for a word of truth, cause all that you have us your soul”

A mile or so later, another old friend, Diana, came along. Ross, that is. Her words were comforting and resounding: “I know, I know you must always follow the sun, wherever it leads, BUT REMEMBER, if you should fall short of your desires, remember life holds for you one guarantee…you’ll always have me.” As I heard these soul warming words, I took a deep breath and my eyes filled with tears from the chilly air and some sort of intermittent melancholy. But, not just that…also for the thrill and the privilege of being alive…for the opportunity to move, to feel my legs pump and my feet hit the ground; to notice my runny nose and my empty, hungry stomach.

Being alive. Stayin Alive. Not taking a thing for granted.

I write from a beautiful inn in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. Just 30 miles north of San Diego. I arrived a few hours ago and have settled in. This is less than a 2-day work trip and not one that I really wanted to do, but now that i am here, it’s nice. I have my own “cottage” at the Inn, which is built in a spanish style and reminds me a lot of Santa Barbara, CA. My room is huge; king size bed, very tall ceiling with wood beams, a stone fireplace and a humongous, gorgeous bathroom. It’s about 85 degrees outside now with clear blue skies. I swear I feel like I’m in one of those soap opera settings..maybe the Bold and the Beautiful. Oh, did i mention this is a free trip. yeah, it’s free. I realize that part of me feels guilty. Guilty for I don’t even know how to explain…

Obviously, for those that know what I do, my work continues to be monstrously stressful, exhausting and worrisome. My work partner was the one scheduled to come on this trip, but at last minute had to cancel, so i have taken his place. I know i will get something out of the main event tomorrow, but I also have a really tough time just being away from the office right now.

Since my 5k race last Saturday, here is what I have done:

Sunday: 5.10 miles am run, hiils; 2nd workout: stair repeats at the track stadium & stregth exercises. The stairs kicked my butt!

Wednesday: 3.6 miles (p.m.)

Thursday: 2.1 miles (a.m) pre-flight

As you can see, not much. Monday and Tuesday I was not feeling good at all. My body started to feel achy and like I was on the verge of sickness. I chugged down a from BOLTHOUSE, which has a ton of Vitamins, especially C. I rested on Tuesday and also took some Emergen-C. Yesterday, after my 5.10 miler, i felt refreshed and happy. It was a sunny, but cool early evening and afterwards I was able to talk to my buddy, Kash, who manages The Big Peach shoe store which is where I had parked. Got up early this morning and snuck in 2 miles before the 4 hour flight west. I hope to get a run in late afternoon tomorrow after my work event has finished. Have a great weekend everyone.

Hey, looks aren’t EVERYTHING

Posted in shoes on October 18, 2008 by afuntanilla

Well, I’ve learned the lesson once again that looks AREN’T everything. Sigh…
This afternoon, I went to what I thought was the place for me to pick up the one I’ve been waiting for. Well, after trying on and running in the new NEW BALANCE trail shoes, I, dejectedly had to admit that it just wasn’t a match! My face fell and my enthusiasm waned as I handed them back to Woody, the shoe guy. “They just don’t feel right”, I said. With an apologetic expression, he took them back into his hands and ppback in the box. He then had me look at another suitor. Normally, I would be quick to just walk away; if I can’t have the ONE I wanted, I don’t want to look anymore.
Well, Woody was patient and gave me all the fine details and strong points of this alternate, which was not as handsome looking as the NB, but not a dog either. I could feel my heart open again as I slipped inside each shoe. Ahhh…much better. A much better fit. I knew it immediately. Just to be sure, I ran around the parking lot. Smiling, I walked inside and told Woody, “yep, they fit”. I was tempted to walk outside and through downtown decatur and show off my latest companion, but I held off. They were not my first choice, but hey, who says the first choice always works out the best anyways?? Here is my newest companion.

In other news: I ran a very small 5k Road Race this morning with a gal pal from the office. She is getting into this running thing and we decided to run the race together. Well, not same pace, but together. You know what I mean. My initial thoughts were I would run with her to help her pace, but then we decided at the start that I would start with her and see how I felt. (cause I have not been running much/still recovering from 50k). Anyways, the morning was a crisp, grey, fall day and the very small Doraville 5k Road Race began without much fanfare. The course was an out and back on an almost entirely flat stretch of road. Hey, that is fine by me after all the hills in the 50k!! We ran 9 minutes for 1st mile which i knew was faster than her training pace. She said she was felt good. I got some water at the aid station and decided to run solo and took off. The turnaround was at 1.5 miles and I could see my pal was not far behind me. GOOD JOB to her! I kept accelerating and accelerating. My breathing was fast and my quads were beginning to burn some. I had on my very lightweight and “fast” Nike shoes. It felt sooo good to be going fast after months and months of training sloooow. As I was running and passing people, I thanked as many of the police volunteers as I could. The last little stretch was the last turn and all downhill. There was a guy in front of me I thought I would pass as I flew down that section. He didn’t seem to be running hard, but as soon as he heard my footsteps, he accelerated through the finish line shoot right before me. Still, a good finish for me in 26:12, pace = 8:27/mile. As soon as I crossed the finish line I turned around and went to cheer on my pal. She had just turned that last corner and I started encouraging her and clapping. “c,mon! Full sprint to the end.” I cheered. She picked it up and finished strong. She finished in approximately 27:40, which was her best time yet. We both finished 1st in our age groups and got a cool medal. Not bad for a Saturday morning.

Sometimes, the underdog rises up and becomes the top Dawg of the night. Sometimes, the team that everyone repeatedly picks on and wants to toss aside comes up big in Prime Time. Sometimes, when you know deep down your team has played horrible in the past, you just hope that they don’t embarass themselves on national tv and make your night a sickly and depressing one. Sometimes, the little team that couldn’t is the team that DID!

The cleveland browns who were 1-3 on the season played againts the defending super bowl champs, NY Giants, who were 4-0. By every statistic, browns should have lost. But, they didn’t. They looked better and played better than they have all season and looked like the team from last year that made us all excited for THIS year. They handily BEAT the NY GIANTS. The Browns faced the #1 offense and shut them down. What a great game. What a pleasure to watch. How proud I am of the team that showed what they have… And this is why, for about 28 years, I have NEVER, EVER, given up on my team!!!

That Hill

Posted in articles, motivation on October 12, 2008 by afuntanilla

That hill you’re approaching? It wants to eat you alive. All hills do. They were put on your running route for just that reason – to shock your lungs and suck the bounce from your quads. Hills have a signed contract with your psyche, that inner goon who doesn’t believe – who never believes – that you’ll make it. dread a hill is to give it way too much power. Only you can work out your relationship  to the hill you’re on. Only you can outrun that inner goon who has no faith in you at all. You’d best do it quickly. The faster you run it, the sooner you’re over it and enjoying it on the way down.

What I’ve been up to…

Posted in articles on October 11, 2008 by afuntanilla

Been taking it easy this past week. Ran wednesday after work for the first time. Just a little 3 miles on treadmill. Friday after work, I got my bike out and went for a 35 minute spin and then ran 1.5 miles. Was pretty great in the autumn air. I ran around a track at a middle school. No one else was around…just me and the faints sounds of the leaves blowing gently. As I rounded the eastern corner of the track and headed west, i could see the sun start to set. Gorgeous. Beautiful evening here in Georgia. My first couple of laps were slow, 2:30ish, but after those, each one was a little faster ending in a 9:04 pace. I am still in recovery mode ( and it was getting dark) so i ended it early.

This afternoon, went for another 3 miler through my neighborhood. Again, perfect weather. 60’s. My mile splits went as such: 9:41, 9:36, 8:26. If only I could run all the splits like the last one!

Tonight/tomorrow, I’m gonna dedicate some time to come up with some non-running training and exercises to do on a daily basis so I can get fitter, stronger, and better.

Man, I sure wish I was back on the trail…
