exercising discipline

today i decided i would omit the following from my diet for one week:

chips, cookies, (all junk food), alcohol.

while i continue to exercise, i want to see how my body will feel with the absence of the items above.

The weather this weekend in Atlanta could not have been more stunningly perfect! About 80-85 both saturday & sunday. no humidity. clear, blue skies. HEAVENLY! AHHHHHH!!! 

I really wanted to go see 2 movies this weekend, but the weather changed my mind. I just could not be enticed to be inside to watch a film, no matter how much i want to see the films. They will just have to wait. 

After dining out tonight, i drove home very leisurely. I love to drive slowly thru beautiful neighborhoods on Sunday evenings. My car windows are rolled down and the sun is about 1 hour away from setting. It’s all quiet on the streets and i feel serene & thoughtful. The trees are getting very full & green, making the scenery all the more beautiful. AHHHH…..a nice way to end the weekend.

Saturday, got out for a good, slow 6 miler. Ran through my old neighborhood. My current neighborhood is not very conducive to running and so I prefer to start and finish other places. My old neighborhood is a great place to run. Finished up about half mile from where i parked so that i could just walk a bit. Ended up talking to a couple who were out walking their pup. Always cool to strike up conversations with strangers. 

Sunday got up and drove over to Silver Comet Trail. had just planned on biking, but was so amped up, I ran too! I was glad to get out there and away from city streets. I feel like i am getting stronger, overall, which is a good feeling. 

April 26: 16.55 mile BIKE, 1 hr 3 min; 2 mile RUN, 18:47 = 8:53 pace

April 25: 6.2 mile RUN, 1 hr 3 min = 10:09 pace

April 23: 5 miles BIKE-INDOOR, 17:10; 2.1 mile RUN-TREADMILL, 18:05, 8:37 pace

April 22: 10 mile BIKE – approx 37 min

I’m glad the race is coming soon. I wanna get out there!

bike learning curve and etc…

haven’t been feeling my best lately. i’m not sure what it has been. just a combination of things, i guess. last week, i experienced 2 days of major frustration with trying to put a new tube in my bike tire for first time. then, more frustration as i bought a new bike saddle and tried to put it on myself. of course, the guys at bike shop tell you it’s easy. let me assure you, it’s not…especially if you have not done it before and are not the put-it-together kind of person. I, am not that kind of person. i don’t like to buy stuff i have to “assemble”. i don’t enjoy it. it’s not fun for me. all i get is frustrated. However, the guys at bike shop sold me on the “easy to do” idea and i tried. And all i got was an evening of frustration. i went back to the bike shop and even the fellas had tough times both changing my tube and putting on my bike seat. let me tell you, if i have to change my tube from a flat during a race, i am gonna be in a world of hurt. The tire is too freaking tight. 2 bike shop guys even had major problems completing the task! Sheesh! FINALLY, this was all done and i got on my bike. New saddle seems much better than my other one. I’ll keep trying it out. 

REI has a bike maintenance clinic for free. Maybe i should check it out. 

Saturday, after my ride, i went for a much needed massage. Hadn’t had one in about 4 months. Sometimes when i go for long periods without one, my body doesn’t respond to well afterwards, and this happened again. I guess my body just gets out of whack with all the muscle movement and lactic acid build up and release. Unfortunately, i felt totally out of whack when i tried to run on Sunday. I managed 2 measly miles and then walked another 2. I feel much better now. I know that when i get regular massage my body is able to adjust better, but of course, that requires more money. we’ll see. 

On a more positive note, was totally excited and inspired to follow and read about Boston marathon stories. Pretty awesome. A shout out to JOSH who had a great finish time of 3:21!! You rock, JOSH!!!!!

I gotta get more time in on the BIKE! Maybe even tomorrow if weather is good.

p.s. I can do a lot of things; just don’t ask me to assemble something for you or anything like that. man, i really don’t like to do that stuff!!

Duathlon Bound

All in all had a decent weekend of training. Better in quality than quantity. 

Weekend really began Thursday after work about 4pm. Drove from my house over near Emory University. A much easier and more beautiful place to run than from right outside my door. Ran a good ~4 miles with some hills. Beautiful weather. Friday was kinda a strange day. I felt all out of whack with my schedule since we had the day off of work(but, then i went in anyways!) Weather was not very good. Strong winds, some rain, some tornado warnings. I did an interval workout on treadmill; 4×400@8:00 min pace & 2×800@8:00 pace. Felt great. 

Saturday was much better. I got on my bike and decided to do a “race” simulated workout.( I am signed up for a sprint Duathlon on May 9th.) I drove over to Decatur YMCA, parked my car & headed out for 3 mile run. Temps were cool & overcast. perfect. The route was pretty flat with minimal traffic interruptions. Came back to car & hopped on the bike while sucking down a gel. Ride was harder than expected. Legs just felt heavy and like I never really got into a good groove. I am just a true novice at the bike thing and have a lot to learn. Rode 10 miles with hills and wind in every direction i went, it seemed like. Riding into wind is worse than running into it. I think. Ask me again after I have been running miles and miles into the wind. Soon enough, off the bike and back on the road for another 1 mile run. Went faster than i had expected and happy about it!  The distances are what the race will be except the bike will be ~13 miles. Now at least I have somewhat of a starting point. 

Sunday rolled around & I went out early for a SLOOOOW 6 mile run. My legs were more fatigued by Saturday than i expected. I even walked for half mile. Was happy to get 6 in. 

Watched the 70.3 Ironman Championship on TV today from 2008. So inspiring!! 

April 12; 6 miles, 1:02:48, 10:28 pace – flat

April 11; 3 mile run, 27:23; 9:08 pace — 10 mile bike, 41:23 — 1 mile run, 8:46

April 10; 4×400@8:00 min pace, 2×800@ 8:00 pace

April 9; 3.83 mile run, 35:44, 9:20 pace – hilly
