you don’t need a reason, you need a road – Nike AD

Wow, last week is a blur. All I recall is that I worked a lot of hours, ran a lower mileage week and suffered on weekend runs. Each training day, each week, is a different tale. Some better, some worse than others. That’s the nature of any training, especially marathon training. I’ve done enough to know its easier to complete the race than to do the actual training week after week and forgive me, but its a helluva lot tougher when u train in summer and live in hot/humid conditions. This aint summer in san francisco, folks. And yet, it is also what makes it all the more gratifying. In no way am I complaining….you ought to know by now that I take some delight in what is difficult. There is pleasure in suffering. My soul thrives. Its not about someone else giving me any credit or patting me on the back. I can do it for myself. My life has been about overcoming obstacles and this is just another part, a CHOSEN obstacle. If I wanted easy, I’d plop down every day and do nothing. If I wanted easy, I would NOT TRAIN FOR MARATHONS in the summer. Believe me, I have enough time to sit around and I’m sure there will come a time when I won’t have a choice, so the time is now.
Here’s a recap thru last sunday:

August 2: 9.25miles outside AM; 4miles treadmill PM
August 1: 3.25miles – outside
July 30: 4 miles outside
July 28: 2×400, 2×800, 2×400
July 27: 3 miles

What? I’ve been running! I ain’t no slacker…

“You don’t need a reason – you need a road. Believe in the run.” Nike Ad

July 24: 3 miles – treadmill
July 22: 4 miles – treadmill – tempo run
July 21: 3.34 miles – outside, hills
July 19: 10 miles – Silver Comet w/ jeff
July 18: 5.5 miles – outside, hills
July 16: 3.1 miles AM; 2.2 miles PM – massage
July 14: 3.50 miles – treadmill

Overall, the training is going ok. I am, however, getting the familiar feeling of noticing it becomes increasingly more difficult to fit all the miles in….you know, with the rest of life. And i really don’t do much else besides work! LOL! But, yeah, overall…going well. This past Monday, which was a rest day, i felt good after the weekly total. Both weekend runs were done at good paces. I was happy to have Jeff eith me on Sunday because i could have easily seen myself splitting that run into 2 had I been alone. So, good to get all 10 done in one fell swoop! THANKS, JEFF!
What is different about this training segment is that I am really trying to be much more deliberate in EACH run. Not going out simply to “get the miles in”, but to be more conscious of what is the purpose and goal of each time out. Trying to much more “pace specific”. And as such, i think i will have to adjust my initial lofty goal of 4 hours. 4 hours is a 9:09 pace/mile. I am not confident right now that i can maintain that pace. It’s still early. I’ve got what, 12 weeks til race day. I’m not giving up on the 4 hour goal by any means; but I am assessing. Important.
I’m back to getting massages every other week which has been incredible. I have a wonderful, strong massage therapist! YAY!
Oh…and yeah, i am thinking of getting another new pair of shoes. Probably another pair of the K-SWISS K-Ona’s in a different color. Awesome shoes.

Thanks for following. Train Hard, Train Smart. CHEERS!

July 8: 47 min run – approx 5 miles outside
July 7: 3.5 miles – treadmill
July 5: 8 miles – outside, silver comet trail
July 4: 5.25 miles – outside
July 3: 4 x 800 w/ 90 sec recovery; 4:14, 3:56, 3:58, 4:04 splits
July 2: 4 miles – treadmill
July 1: 3 miles – outside

The training for my next marathon is now in “official” effect. I feel committed and excited. Each time i begin training, it is different. Each time brings new challenges and new revelations. And of course, some things are the same. Some of the roads or trails i will venture on are the same ones I’ve been running on…and they serve as comfort. They are my friends. Part of my support system. Welcoming me back again. Challenging and cheering.

October in San Francisco. I will be there.

Inspiration all around. From Federer and Roddick; from Lance and from my beloved SF Giants. And, from all those people in life who I see out of the roads trying to exercise, trying to just get a walk in or a slow run. They are sometimes overweight and I think of the struggles they might go through and how its not easy for them to get out there. But they do it. They put on their own gear and get out the door. I nod and I smile and cheer them on. We are all on the same, aren’t we?

A good week or training. Finally got above 20 miles for week. Better yet, I ran in some serious heat/humidity. Hard, but always feel like a good accomplishment afterwards. Wednesday did somewhat of a speed workout; 1 mile hard, 4 x 1/4 mile hard, 1 mile hard. Man, my HR was really up there. Thursday ran 3 inside on treadmill, went outside and did some small hill repeats in the parking lot of a church. God was watching!  🙂

Just as I wanted, I woke earlier on Saturday and Sunday to try to beat some of the major heat/humidity. Still pretty tough. No way to really get away from it now. Jut gotta adjust. Saturday, a bunch of runners gathered at THE BIG PEACH in brookhaven to run the Peachtree Rd Race course, so I joined in and did a modified run. 3 out and 3 back along peachtree. Was pretty cool to have a bunch of runners scattered about along Peachtree! We are takin’ over!! LOL

Sunday, I made the drive out to Silver Comet and ran a good 7. As usual, devastatingly gorgeous out there this time of year with all the green! Whenever the day comes when I move away from Atlanta, i will surely miss that place! Did another 3 on treadmill Sunday evening. Again, felt great on the last run of the week!

I’ve got a new batch of ULTRAGEN. I totally believe in this recovery drink! It helps, big time. After both Saturday and Sunday morning runs, i took some dips in the pool. How refreshing and soothing.

Mentally, I feel like I am in a good place with the running. I’m feeling more motivated. More focused. I don’t think it’s any coincidence either that my “official” training schedule will kick off next week. SF Nike Marathon: here i come.

I only have to ask myself this everyday: “what are you prepared to do”

In the words of the great George Sheehan: ““If you want to win anything- a race, yourself, your life- you have to go a little berserk”

June 21: am 7 miles – Silver Comet; pm 3 miles – treadmill

June 20: 6 miles – outside

June 18: 3 miles treadmill, hill repeats outside

June 17: 1 mile, 4 x .25m, 1 mile – speed workout

a review & a wrap

Per Josh, I am gonna give a review of my new Pearl Izumi Streak shoes: this a very light (6.9 oz) shoe. It is neutral and can be used as a racing “flat” or for longer distances. The shoe seems to run a little small, so even though i am size 8, they feel a little tight in the toe box. if you are gonna check it out, i would also check out the 1/2 size up from your normal size. I didn’t do this and although I feel ok with the 8, i would like to see what the 8.5 feels like. I love that they are so light. They feel sweet on my feet. I’ve run on treadmill with them and outside. I noticed when I ran outside on the wet streets that they seemed a bit slippery, so be cautious of this. They don’t seem to have as good a grip on the soles as most my other shoes. Overall, happy with my purchase. I will want to try Pearl Izumi trail shoes, but I have to at least wait awhile. I don’t need any new trails shoes. YET. 🙂

ok. on to the week/weekend wrap. Wednesday woke up around 6, got out of bed, dressed, and went downstairs to the gym. Ran a good 3 miles on treadmill. I was proud of myself for getting up and doing this because I rarely workout on weekday mornings, but i just felt like i wanted to mix things up a bit. Ran about another 3 miles after work on Wednesday.
Saturday, it was ugly outside. We had rain most of the day on Friday and it continued Saturday. It wasn’t cold out, just rainy and dark and grey! Since it wasn’t very cold, I ran a good 6 after going into the office for a bit. My legs felt unusually heavy and tired. Not sure why. I was just happy to finish with 6.
Sunday comes along and no rain, but very grey skies and about 48 degrees. I woke up late and after coffee and piddling around I went over to Performance Bike.
It is about 1/2 -3/4 mile from my place. I got my tired pumped up and looked for some new cycling shorts. Unsuccessful. Was about to hop on my bike when my phone rang and it was my friend, Shu (pronounced SUE). I said i was getting on my bike and about to swing by her place. So, that’s what I did. I rode to her house and sat for about 10 minutes. Drank some water and then hopped back on the bike. The return trip was tough. Steeper hills and wind. Riding a bike in the wind is worse than running in the wind! But, i made it through the wind and hills back to my car. 10 miles total trip. I then drove back to my house and opted for the treadmill. My body was cold & I just felt like being inside. Ran a good 4.2 miles while watching some NCAA mens basketball. I felt strong & maybe thought of going longer, but decided to call it at 4.2. Did some AB work and then got cleaned up & fed.

And for Jeffro out there: i offer you more from Peal Izumi to try to help get you motivated! C’mon Buddy!

run easy is an oxymoron. what is about running that scares people so much? why do people feel they have to put friendly modifiers next to running so everyone can feel good about it? Well, here’s the ugly truth. everyone shouldn’t feel good about running. it’s hard. it hurts. running requires sacrifice and heart and guts. any attempt to water it down with feel good adjectives is a slap in the face to those of us who still hold running sacred. in fact, if you are running easy, chances are you’re not running at all. you’re jogging. so do us a favor, don’t run easy. Run hard. Run like an animal.

OH! and CONGRATS to all the folks who ran ING Half or Full Marathon this morning. Especially my buddy, Ryan Harry!!
