The After

Posted in running, trail with tags , , , , , on September 14, 2014 by afuntanilla

When your body is caked with dirt, mud, sweat from the undulating, unrelenting, beautiful terrain.

When your pulse finally settles down, normalizes to others; rest of life

Your eyes move over in a quiet gaze, noticing the world; the people, their movements

It all seems kind of dreamy, doesn’t it?

Looking down at your feet,

Shoes removed

Tan line of dirt wrap perfectly around the edge of where leg meets ankle

& the protruding ends of Tibia, Fibula.

Toe nails slightly bruised

A small blister showing signs of life

Otherwise,

Feet look regular,

As if out for a stroll

Only you know

What they have been through

Where they have traveled

What they got you through

How they helped you

Climb, conquer

The trail, today

Tomorrow, awaits

Smirk

Death
Snatched one
And then the other
From the palms of life
How to explain
The stricken
And the sudden
We are left grappling,
Clawing at our skin,
Our eyes,
Begging for answers
While death…

Is smirking in the distance
At what you thought you knew
At what you thought you had

What was the attraction,
I’ll never know
All I heard was
“He was a good man”

‘Good’ enough
To leave you with a baby,
Your 4th child
The last without a father

‘Good’ enough
To take his own life
Thru his
Careless, addicted ways

‘Good’ enough to haunt you
In the many years to follow
To make you drink your life away
Your spirit, sadly lingering on
While your body ballooned and deteriorated

A “good man”….

Hmph….I’ll never know….

Love After Love

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Waves of Pacific,

In your beach house

I’m a beginner again;

Vulnerable

Fragile

Naked and Free.

Tearing up as I watch you build

Then burst,

Splattering all over…

You have such freedom.

Hard for me to open up here,

On your shore –

Harder not to –

Your force draws me in

Pulls apart my protected heart.

I cannot hide here –

So exposed by your windows of acceptance,

Your welcome mat of compassion.

In your company I see

I am big, yet tiny

Powerful yet weak,

Blissfully full yet staggeringly empty.

You remind me of Permanence

Of Change,

Of Booming Disruption

and Soothing Calm

Oh, Pacific…

How is it you give so freely…

I am to learn from you.

“…i saw you last night in the gathering, but could not take you openly in my arms, so i put my lips next to your cheek, pretending to talk privately.”
