A 13.1 Point of View

I ran another half-marathon. July 26th, 2015 in San Francisco. The were a few other races at the event. One could opt to run the Full Marathon, the 1st half-marathon, the 2nd half-marathon, a double marathon or a 5k. I ran the Full in 2005, the 1st half in 2012, and the 2nd half in 2013, where I finally set a PR at the distance, 1:58:42. About 6 weeks prior to race, I had visions of breaking that PR, but as the date inched closer and the speedwork waned….i had to accept that I wasn’t going for a PR. As the hours came close to start time, I figured I could do 2:05. So. Off I went.

The 2nd half starts in Golden Gate Park. It was a cool, 55 degrees kind of morning. A bit of fog still lingering from the nearby Pacific. The 1st five miles are in and around the park…felt like a nice stroll with a bunch of people. I was very aware of pace and making sure i didn’t go too fast too early. After leaving the park, course goes through Haight-Ashbury, lower Haight, crosses market street to the Mission district. I was feeling ok. Not great. I was aware that I was pushing the entire way and keeping on pace. My exertion level felt high and my quads were getting tighter and tighter. Otherwise, i felt ok. [my longest run during this training was only 8 miles, so maybe that had an effect. 🙂 ]

I just kept focused. period. I knew the course so i knew if there were any potential uncomfortable places coming up and there weren’t. This half is actually almost all flat. Super slight hills in the park and 1-2 more on course, but they are really nothing. The first half is much more hilly, FYI. So, I knew i would hit my goal time if i just stayed focused….After the mission, we zig zag through Potrero Hill, Dogwatch and then very close to the bay in the Mission Bay neighborhood. Run right by the SF Giants Ballpark (A T & T Park) and a straightaway along the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building. As we approached A T & T Park, that’s when i felt i hit a wall. It was just past mile 12. Legs were shot. I stopped to walk a min. I couldn’t believe how i just couldn’t really lift my legs. Kinda funny now, actually. Anyway…i kept chugging along and finished 2:05:51.

I was fine with this as my expectations were inline. Some stats:

Overall: 1518 out of 3984

Women: 591 out of 2118

Females Age 40-49: 99 out of 381

So….I have to say that once again I’m very grateful to be healthy and able to run. I try not to take anything, especially my health, for granted. AND…as I crossed the finish line, I noticed that i was very kind of ho-hum…not really excited or anything. Happy to be done because it was a push for me at that pace right now, but otherwise…just not too excited. So, I just noticed this feeling and kinda explored what it is about…and you know what….it’s because it was such a short race!

What’s next? Stat tuned. I’m scheming….

P.S. Shoes: The New Balance 1400v3. Great shoes I bought in early July. It’s super lightweight, racing type shoe. Not much cushioning so i won’t wear it for longer distances, but was great today as it was for the Peachtree Race i did on 7/4/2015.

Onward!

insight

So, I’ve gained a bit of insight into my physical funk feeling. It HASN’T all just been due to some personal stuff happening —

I’ve been having some lingering problem with dental stuff. Yes, dental stuff. I had a crown put on about a month ago, along with 2 separate fillings. I was in some serious pain afterwards for about 3-4 days. UGH! Then, I was good for about 2 weeks. Then, some newer pain emerged in same tooth. I finally went back to dentist 2 weeks ago and she thought it was my bite…so she worked on that and the pain was alleviated for about a week. Then, last Saturday, I encountered more pain and knew I had to go back and see what the hell was happening (probably need a root canal, i think). Then, I noticed my right cheek was swollen. (tooth is on right side) So…no brainer, swollen cheek has to do with tooth problem. All this while, I was noticing my physical self not feeling 100% — feeling sluggish on runs, unfocused, etc…and never did I link the 2 together….until, a friend of mine says….”well, you probably have an infection and need antibiotics.” So, sure enough, went to dentist today and confirmed that same tooth I just had the crown put on about a 5 weeks ago now needs a root canal. She gave me prescription for antibiotics and I’m already feeling a little better. Root canal is scheduled for Monday, the day after SF Half Marathon Race.

As soon as I left dentist office today, I felt better because I had an answer as to what has been going on. It sucks to NOT KNOW.

I still have no idea what to expect of myself on Sunday, but I’m excited. Tomorrow I will head on down to the expo and I’m looking forward to that event. Hope they have some cool swag!

1 week to Go

Posted in motivation, road, running with tags , , , on July 23, 2012 by afuntanilla

1 week until race day. SF Half Marathon next weekend. I’ll be so happy to get out there and run a road race again. I have not run a (road race) in quite a while now. Did the trail race earlier this year in March, and as you know, trail races are different beasts all together.

I’ve had a couple of good weeks of running, not great, but good. This week, I plan on running just 1-2 days. My body, i’ve discovered, especially my legs, work well on adequate rest. So, maybe get a massage this week and a short run or 2 and that’s it. Need to make sure my nutrition is all good and get lots of sleep.

I’m looking forward to running a race in San Francisco again. I ran this race as the FULL MARATHON back in 2005 and one of my overall best race experiences! It was a gorgeous day throughout the city and I had lots of friends who came to support me. An awesome day.

This time, I’m going for my goal of under 2 hour finish. My best half marathon time is 2:01:43. As mentioned before on this blog, I ran that time in my very first ever Half-Marathon race in 1999. That race, too, was in San Francisco, but a different course. The course on Sunday will begin in Golden Gate Park and cover miles approximately 1-5, then goes into lower/upper haight, Mission District, Mission Bay/At&T Park (SFGIANTS HOME) and then finishes right at the awesome Ferry Building along with the full marathon. I’m looking forward to it.

If anyone wants info on the race, go to http://www.sfmarathon.com

So, my primary goal is to finish under 2 hours, even if I finish 1:59:59, I will be super thrilled. My secondary goal would be to best my time of 2:01:43.

I think I can. I think I can….

Stay tuned….and keep that body healthy!! ONWARD!

Final week of June

The last week of June has come and gone. I’m glad to see the month over as it was super busy and very challenging in just trying to stay healthy in all ways.

I got in 2 short runs this past week. Treadmill run – 3.5 miles at 8:45 pace – followed by solid strength workout. Outdoor run – 3.0 miles at 8:58 pace. Lately, I had been running Saturday and Sunday, but I decided to rest legs yesteday and go for it today. Sunday run – 8 miles at 9:04 pace. I was pleased with this effort. I just looked back in my training journal and saw that 8 miles is the longest I have run on any training day since last OCTOBER. wow. Yikes! Didn’t know it had been that long. And yet, my pace today for this distance was better than it has been in a LOOOONG time. SO, what this tells me is the interval runs and strength training is paying off. AND, it helps to live somewhere where the heat and humidity suck every once of enery you have…BTW, I saw it was over 100 degrees in Atlanta this weekend….YES, its safe to say I am glad to not have to face that weather anymore. Yikes!
Oddly enough, it was cool in Petaluma this morning, but there was some humidity….

I am still reading “Running on Empty” by Marshall Ulrich. I am thoroughly enjoying and recommend for anyone to read…not just runners. He writes simply, yet with a lot of depth and shows his humanity. His adventures are incredible!

As I write this late Sunday evening, I am still feeling good from the 8 miler today. The pace gives me confidence for my upcoming half marathon in SF. I still have work to do, but I am getting there, one step at a time. There were moments today in the early miles where I just had a hard time getting focused, but as I saw my splits on my watch as each mile passed, I became more and more intent. The last 2 miles, I just put my head down and ran. Breathing, running…great way to start JULY 2012

Make it count. Be brave. Be bold. Make it happen.

Week 5 Run Report

Greetings, friends. I am currently in Petaluma, CA, where I will be staying with friends until I find a place of my own.
Week 5 of 2012 had me running in Las Vegas on Monday, Jan 30th. Well…it was actually the treadmill at the Bellagio. I ran a swift 4 miles and worked out in the super nice Fitness Room.
I had long travel day on Tuesday and Wednesday was my first night back “home”!
I ran a good 5 miles on Thursday. Ran from friends house in Petaluma down through town and met her at her club where she was playing tennis. First 2.5 miles were kinda hard; my body felt tired…but then, the next 2.5 were very strong. I was on a straightaway and just took off. yay!
Ran another strong 5 miles on Saturday. This was the weeks most gratifying run. I started and ended at friends house. She lives in a place basically at the top of a steep driveway. Prior to her driveway is a less steep driveway. Prior to those 2 driveways is a long, gradual, slope uphill on the road. So…she doubted I would run up those tough parts, but I did. Not once, not twice, but 3 times, I ran up the toughest sections. 3 times. Hell yeah, baby! Huffing and puffing, but felt awesome afterwards. Once you get to the top and are standing on her patio…let me tell you..the view is all worth it. Gorgeous area and you can see for miles. Was a beautiful way to begin a Saturday.
So, only 14 miles for week 5, but felt good about them. No Junk Miles!
Sunday, I was in San Francisco as a cheerleader for my friends 1st Half-Marathon. A true pleasure for me to be there to cheer her on as well as the other runners. I loved seeing those faces as they ran by; some in agony, others looked like they were cruising along. This race was my 1st ever Half-Marathon back in 1999…the one where I still have yet to surpass the time for that distance. But, I will.

So let it be written. So let it be done.

Week 5: 14 Miles
