keep on

trying to think of what i want to say.

for one, i want my hour back. damn you spring forward.

on my run today, i passed two ladies who were walking. one was in front of the other. the one in front said, “we keep walking. we don’t stop. that’s our motto. we keep on.”

sounds good to me.

A solid 9 miler on the Silver Comet to finish the week. looking forward to my next race which i believe will be a half-marathon in Clemson, SC; only about 2-2.5 hour drive from Atlanta. April 2nd.

numbers, et al.

I first heard about the Western States 100 UltraMarathon back on the eve of my first ever HALF-MARATHON in 1999. A friend was explaining the race to me and as i was about to embark on 13.1 miles the next day, hearing about this 100 MILE race was incomprehensible. I could barely wrap my head around 13.1 miles…100 miles…whew!!

It’s years later now and while I know 100 miles is a lot, it is no longer incomprehensible to me. I mention this because this classic, bad-ass annual race took place this past Saturday. The route starts in Squaw Valley, CA & ends in Auburn, CA covering some ridiculous elevation along with snow in the beginning and 90 degrees+ later in the day. I was following along via the web & twitter to get updates on some of the ultrarunners that inspire me. It is truly amazing what the top runners are able to do…what their bodies are able to do. AMAZING.

No, I’m not planning on running a 100 mile race…at least not anytime soon. 🙂 I just mention this because, there I was, saturday morning, all inspired and amped up!! Damn 100 miles. That’s a long way!!

Here are some tidbits from some recent runs:

Wednesday; 5.25 miles, treadmill
Thursday; 4 miles, 95 degrees
Saturday; 5.16 miles, 85 degrees, 68% humidity
Sunday; a.m. 10 miles, 74 degrees, 85% humidity; p.m. 3o min walk/run/hill repeats. 90 degrees

Diet: all vegetarian.

here are some pics of some of the training ground:

Heading west on Silver Comet Trail (below)

Trying to cool off afterwards in the creek!

It was pretty damn peaceful sitting there after 10 good miles!

At least a couple of days a week, usually after running on treadmill, I will run up these steps. They are the beginning of the 6 flights up to my place. I love running these!!

I know I talk about the heat a lot, but damn…y’all…we’ve had some RIDICULOUS weather here lately. I cannot remember the last time it WAS NOT 95+ degrees outside. Everyday the heat and high humidity. This is not too customary for June in Atlanta. July and August but not June. I don’t even think we had a Spring. Walking across the street in the afternoons to grab coffee just about knocks me out. I feel like my face is on fire. Seriously. Well….what are you gonna do, right?

Like they say, ‘that which doesn’t kills us, makes us stronger’.

Go to it. Get Strong. Get Stronger.

…on my way to 40….that’s almost HALF of a 100… just sayin’

hi!

Heavily involved in watching all the US Open tennis this week. Some great matches, huh! Local Kid, MELANIE OUDIN! She was on a fantastic roll and certainly brought more excitement to US Womens Tennis. Congrats to you kid, and HEY, NICE SHOES!

Saturday night rolled around an stayed up late watching the Serena vs Kim Clijsters match. Was very impressed with Clijsters! She played solid and I was rooting for her. Even before the Serena incident, i was thinking; “wow, she seems really pissed off out there” – Slamming her racquet, constantly talking to herself…i had never seen her like that before. Only comments i have on her behavior that ended the match is this: completely unprofessional and very disappointing. Beyond that, it really robbed the fans both in the stands and on tv a chance to see the match end organically, especially those waiting in all the rain delays. And most of all, it robbed Clijsters of the moment. She was playing fantastic and deserved a better end to the match. As I write this, Womens final is on ESPN2 (which i think is LAME) and I am rooting for Kim.

Watched some of the Federer/Djokovic match. Was flipping channels between that and the SF/LA Dodgers game. Thankfully SF won! I did happen to catch some great points in the tennis match, especially this one:

Phenomenal in-between-the-legs winner! Love Roger!!

OK. Now about the running. An OK week. Not great, but still getting some miles in. Highlight was Saturday long run. I switched it up from Sunday just for a change and to see if i would notice any difference. I found myself a little more excited to go out there, but it was still painful and long. 14 miles. was more humid than we have had lately. Went to silver comet trail. jeff met me at 4.2 mile marker and we ran together from there. Was good to have him there again after 2 weeks of him being gone on weekends. Thanks, Jeffro. I am still not where i need or want to be in terms of long run mileage or weekly mileage in preparation for this marathon. Talked a little to jeff about it. it’s just tough to get the miles in ya know. tough time wise and energy wise. I really need to go longer in the weekday runs if i expect more on the weekend. We’ll see what this week brings. Hope it is all good.

here’s a pic after the 14 miler on Saturday.

So, the Tour de France came to an end. Been amazing to watch the coverage on Versus. Very happy for Lance and his 3rd place finish. Pretty damn amazing. 4 years away from racing. Nearly 38 years old.
Can’t wait to see what he will do next. Speculation out there he will go for Ironman in Kona. Would not be surprised!

In my last post, I mentioned how I was trying to be more intentional with each outing and not running just for running sake. Well, that changed this weekend when I just ran to get the miles in. When the legs are tired, sometimes, it’s just gonna be this way.

I’ve designated Saturdays as my “shorter-longer” runs w/ hills. Sundays have been longer and flat. For now.

This past Saturday, i ran over by Emory University and Druid Hills neighborhood. Lots of good hills. Had good pace, but started late in the morning so did have some warmer temperatures. Paid the price for sleeping in and even so, had a crappy sleep! Last 1/2 mile was TOUGH.

Today’s run was again done over at Silver Comet Trail. No Jeff this time. He went away for weekend to go boozin’ with some buddies. SLACKER.
Got another later start than i would have liked, but oh well…
Strapped on my trusty Nathan pack and took off. One of the things i thought of while out there today was how some people say they get bored when they run. I don’t think I have ever been bored while running. For me, there are too many things to think about. When I start a long run, my focus is just on settling in and staying on pace and paying attention to my body. After I have settled in, my mind wanders; i people watch (when they are around) and then most of the time i think about things in my life; what’s been happening, what’s coming up for me, etc…I relish that time(mostly) as my escape from everything…from work, from TV, Internet, Phone, crowds of people…Other times I find myself completely zoned out to music on my iPod. And then, invariably, in the later miles, my mind is not wandering because the pain takes over and that’s all I am focused on. At that point, it’s about managing my thoughts so that I can get thru the run. I am definitely not off in LaLa land when my quads are stiffening and sweat is falling and burning my eyes.
Nope. Never bored. Plus, most of the time I am running somewhere beautiful. How could beauty ever be a bore?

July 26: 11 miles – Silver Comet Trail – solo
July 25: 6 miles – outside, hills

Would like to get a speed session in this week. Gotta hit the track. Painful but helpful.

See ya!

trivia question at the end…

There’s a ridiculous amount of inspiration out there right now, in my opinion; Tour de France, Hardrock 100 Ultra just happened over Fri/Sat, Badwater Ultramarathon starts tomorrow, Monday. YAY. I lOVE all this stuff going on!! And, my beloved SF Giants are playing some good ball!

Had a solid week and weekend of training. Last few are as follows;

July 12: 9 miles – silver comet w/ Jeff
July 11: 5.25 miles – outside, 3 big hills, pushed pace
July 9: 3 miles – outside

It’s still hot and humid here, but not as bad as it was a few weeks ago. We’ll see what the next week brings. Feeling good. Feeling strong, motivated and inspired. I was listening to some of the Tour de France race coverage and heard one of the announcers say a lot of success in the tour comes from knowing and being very in tune with your body over such a long haul. Same thing with the marathon and training, i think. You really do get to know your body and it’s rhythms and workings. All pretty important when taking on a long endeavor.

OK: Trivia question is: “what does the number 6 in my photo refer to?
Hints: It has to do with running and no, it’s not the # of miles I ran after the photo. 1st correct answer will get a prize. Good Luck!

A good week or training. Finally got above 20 miles for week. Better yet, I ran in some serious heat/humidity. Hard, but always feel like a good accomplishment afterwards. Wednesday did somewhat of a speed workout; 1 mile hard, 4 x 1/4 mile hard, 1 mile hard. Man, my HR was really up there. Thursday ran 3 inside on treadmill, went outside and did some small hill repeats in the parking lot of a church. God was watching!  🙂

Just as I wanted, I woke earlier on Saturday and Sunday to try to beat some of the major heat/humidity. Still pretty tough. No way to really get away from it now. Jut gotta adjust. Saturday, a bunch of runners gathered at THE BIG PEACH in brookhaven to run the Peachtree Rd Race course, so I joined in and did a modified run. 3 out and 3 back along peachtree. Was pretty cool to have a bunch of runners scattered about along Peachtree! We are takin’ over!! LOL

Sunday, I made the drive out to Silver Comet and ran a good 7. As usual, devastatingly gorgeous out there this time of year with all the green! Whenever the day comes when I move away from Atlanta, i will surely miss that place! Did another 3 on treadmill Sunday evening. Again, felt great on the last run of the week!

I’ve got a new batch of ULTRAGEN. I totally believe in this recovery drink! It helps, big time. After both Saturday and Sunday morning runs, i took some dips in the pool. How refreshing and soothing.

Mentally, I feel like I am in a good place with the running. I’m feeling more motivated. More focused. I don’t think it’s any coincidence either that my “official” training schedule will kick off next week. SF Nike Marathon: here i come.

I only have to ask myself this everyday: “what are you prepared to do”

In the words of the great George Sheehan: ““If you want to win anything- a race, yourself, your life- you have to go a little berserk”

June 21: am 7 miles – Silver Comet; pm 3 miles – treadmill

June 20: 6 miles – outside

June 18: 3 miles treadmill, hill repeats outside

June 17: 1 mile, 4 x .25m, 1 mile – speed workout
